Have you ever looked around at your life and thought:
"Well... this definitely wasn't the plan."
I think most of us have had that moment.
Actually, if we're being honest, some of us have had that moment several times.
When I was younger, I thought life would follow a fairly predictable path.
You know the one.
You make a plan.
You work the plan.
The plan works.
Everybody lives happily ever after.
Simple.
Except life rarely asks our permission before changing the itinerary.
Relationships change.
Careers change.
Dreams change.
People leave.
Doors close.
Unexpected opportunities show up.
And suddenly the life you carefully mapped out looks nothing like the one you're living.
I've had plenty of those moments.
I never planned on joining the Army at 32.
I never planned on serving 17 years and deploying three times.
I never planned on becoming a realtor.
I never planned on becoming a life coach.
I never planned on writing books.
I certainly never planned on becoming a speaker.
If you had shown me my life today twenty years ago, I probably would have laughed and told you that you had the wrong person.
Yet here I am.
And here's what I've learned:
Sometimes the life we planned isn't nearly as good as the life God had planned.
Now before you throw your phone across the room, let me explain.
I'm not saying every detour is easy.
I'm not saying every disappointment feels good.
Some seasons hurt.
Some losses leave scars.
Some chapters bring tears we never expected to cry.
But I've also discovered that purpose often hides inside the detours.
The setback teaches resilience.
The heartbreak teaches compassion.
The failure teaches wisdom.
The delay teaches patience.
The unexpected turn develops strength we didn't know we needed.
The problem is that we usually don't see any of that while we're living it.
We only see it looking backward.
When I look back over my life, I can see places where I thought everything was falling apart.
Now I realize those were the moments God was putting things together.
Not according to my plan.
According to His.
And honestly?
His plan turned out much better.
The older I get, the less interested I am in controlling every detail.
I'm learning to trust the process.
I'm learning to trust God's timing.
And I'm learning that purpose isn't always found on the road we expected to travel.
Sometimes it's waiting for us on the road we never wanted to take.
If your life doesn't look like the plan right now, take heart.
You may be standing in the middle of a chapter that won't make sense until later.
Keep walking.
Keep trusting.
Keep believing.
One day you'll look back and realize the detour wasn't taking you away from your purpose.
It was taking you directly to it.
What detour in your life ended up teaching you something valuable you never would have learned otherwise?
Instead of focusing on where your life differs from the plan, spend a few moments reflecting on how far you've come.
You may discover that the road you never wanted to travel has led you exactly where you needed to be.
