One of the hardest lessons I have learned in life is that you cannot build your future on someone else's potential. You cannot put your life on hold waiting for another person to become who you hope they will be.
That doesn't mean people can't change. They absolutely can.
But real change doesn't happen because someone is pressured, nagged, rescued, or loved enough. Real change happens when a person decides they are ready to take responsibility for their actions and do the work.
The problem is that many of us spend years waiting for that moment to happen.
We wait for the apology.
We wait for the effort.
We wait for the promises to finally match the actions.
We wait for them to become the person we know they could be.
And while we are waiting, life keeps moving.
I have worked with people who stayed in unhealthy relationships for years because they were holding on to who someone might become instead of accepting who they were right now.
That is a painful place to live.
Hope is a beautiful thing. But hope can become dangerous when it keeps us stuck.
There is a difference between supporting someone's growth and sacrificing your own well-being while waiting for them to change.
At some point, we have to ask ourselves a difficult question:
What if they never change?
Not because we are giving up.
Not because we are being negative.
But because our lives matter too.
If they never change, will you continue to accept behavior that hurts you?
Will you continue to put your dreams, peace, and happiness on hold?
Will you continue to carry the weight of a relationship that only one person is working to improve?
Those are hard questions, but they are necessary ones.
One of the biggest pivots we can make is shifting our focus away from changing other people and toward healing ourselves.
We cannot control someone else's choices.
We cannot force accountability.
We cannot make another person value what they refuse to value.
What we can do is decide how we respond.
We can set boundaries.
We can choose peace over chaos.
We can stop making excuses for behavior that continues to wound us.
We can remember that our worth is not determined by whether someone else chooses to grow.
The truth is, some people will change.
Some won't.
But your future cannot depend on which choice they make.
Your healing begins when you stop waiting for someone else to become different and start giving yourself permission to move forward.
Because sometimes the most powerful pivot is realizing that the person who needs to change first isn't them.
It's the version of you that keeps waiting.
Restarting is not failure. Restarting is pivoting in your purpose.
