Memorial Day hits differently when you’ve worn the uniform.
For many people, today means backyard barbecues, mattress sales, family gatherings, and the unofficial start of summer.
But for those of us who served…
It means remembering names.
Faces.
Voices.
Moments.
And sometimes memories we wish we could forget.
Memorial Day is not Veterans Day.
Today is about honoring those who never came home.
The ones who gave everything.
The ones whose families had to receive folded flags instead of hugs.
The ones whose future ended so ours could continue.
As someone who served 17 years in the Army and deployed three times, I know this day carries weight.
And while I thankfully made it home, I know not everyone did.
Some battles took lives overseas.
Some battles followed people home.
That truth matters too.
Memorial Day reminds us of sacrifice—but I think it also reminds us of responsibility.
If someone gave their tomorrow…
What are we doing with our today?
That’s not meant to create guilt.
It’s meant to create gratitude.
Because too often, we survive things and then forget to actually live.
We get stuck in survival mode.
We carry guilt.
Pain.
Memories.
Regret.
Questions.
And sometimes we shrink instead of rise.
But what if honoring sacrifice also means choosing purpose?
What if remembering the fallen means living in a way that makes your second chance count?
Not perfectly.
Not pressure-filled.
But intentionally.
Maybe your “living well” looks like healing.
Maybe it looks like forgiving someone.
Maybe it looks like getting help.
Maybe it looks like finally stepping into the calling you’ve been avoiding.
Maybe it simply looks like taking one brave step forward.
As a life coach, veteran, and human who has had to rebuild more than once, I’ll tell you this:
You don’t honor sacrifice by staying stuck.
You honor it by living with purpose.
Today, we pause.
We remember.
We honor.
And then we rise.
Because freedom was costly.
And purpose is one way we say thank you.
What am I doing with the life I’ve been given?
If life has knocked you sideways and you’re trying to figure out what comes next, maybe this is your reminder:
Your story isn’t over.
Your pivot may be painful—but purpose can still rise from it.
