As we work through healing from past trauma, we often hear people say, "Forgive for yourself, not for the other person." Okay. We can understand that. We can work toward that.
But then comes the hardest part of all: acceptance.
Acceptance means acknowledging that something happened without allowing it to control who you become. It means accepting that the hurt was real, the pain was real, and the impact was real—but it doesn't get to write the rest of your story.
We also have to accept that while we were trying to heal, we may have made some decisions we're not proud of. Maybe we handled things poorly. Maybe we reacted out of pain. Maybe we chose unhealthy ways to cope.
Guess what?
We can overcome those decisions too.
A bad decision doesn't mean you're a bad person. It doesn't mean you're stuck. It doesn't mean your future is already written. Recovery, growth, and change are always possible when we're willing to do the work.
Maybe you turned to alcohol to numb the pain. Maybe drugs. Maybe both. Maybe your coping mechanism looked completely different. Whatever it was, that doesn't have to define the rest of your life.
Sometimes we resist acceptance because we think accepting what happened means we approve of it. We think accepting our mistakes means we're excusing them. But acceptance isn't approval.
You don't have to like what happened.
You don't have to agree with what happened.
You don't have to be glad it happened.
You simply have to acknowledge it happened.
Once we stop fighting reality, we can start healing from it. We can release the shame, guilt, anger, and regret that keep us trapped in the past. We can begin to see ourselves not as broken, but as people who survived difficult things and are still rising.
If you want to pivot away from those painful feelings, you first have to acknowledge they're there. Then you can decide what comes next. You can make a plan. You can take a step forward. You can choose a different path.
Because you can't pivot from a place you refuse to acknowledge.
Acceptance doesn't mean you like it.
Acceptance means you're ready to stop letting it control you.
